Our Programs
The East of the River Steelband has grown. We are serving more youth and our community!
EOTR Steelband
The East of the River Steelband was the dream and work of Dr. Gladys Whitworth Bray, founded in 1993 to bring this unique, cultural, and musical experience to youth living east of the Anacostia River. Building on her foundation, we continue to provide youth with music education, life skills, and cultural education. Marking 30 years in 2023, we continue to celebrate youth, communities, and cultures. Over the years, the program has provided music education, arts, and cultural education to hundreds of children and youth through its programs.
Jr. Corp aka “The Littles”
The Jr. Steelpan Class introduces children ages 8–11 to steelpan basics, including rhythm, technique, and music theory. Students develop skills through hands-on practice and teamwork, building confidence and creativity. The program offers a fun, supportive environment with opportunities to perform and celebrate their musical growth at community events.
EOTRS Leadership & Lifeskills - (ELLA)
East of the River Leadership & Life Skills Academy! Our academy is dedicated to providing a unique learning experience that integrates music education, leadership development, and personal growth opportunities. We believe in nurturing the holistic development of young individuals, equipping them with the skills and mindset necessary to succeed in both their personal and academic lives.
Summer Camp
This year, our summer program, Amplify Your Voice, empowers participants to discover and express their unique voices through spoken word, song, rap, and steelpan music. Weekly workshops explore storytelling, poetry, singing, and rhythm, building toward a dynamic final showcase. With expert instructors and a focus on collaboration, creativity, and cultural pride, participants boldly claim their stage.
Steelpan for Adults
At the beginning of 2025, we started our new program for Adults interested in learning Steelpan.
The Pan Village
The Pan Village is a vibrant, supportive community of parents, families, and friends who champion our young musicians. Through volunteering, fundraising, and cheering from the sidelines, the Pan Village fuels our program’s spirit and success, proving that with community support, every child can rise musically, culturally, and personally.
